what-cat-breed-is-right-for-me

In the same way, we come in all shapes and sizes, cats come in different sizes and breeds. They are all uniquely different in their own way. Cats are commonly kept as pets, and there is a reason one person would prefer a particular breed to another. All in all, these small, lovable and furry creatures are the pride and joy of most families.

There are more than 70 different breeds of cats to choose from. Cats have a strong, flexible body, sharp teeth, sharp reflexes, and claws for killing small prey. So what cat breed is right for me? Described below are a few examples of the favorite breeds of cat available out there.

Persian Cats

Persian cats are one of the most popular cat breeds to keep as a pet, especially indoors. It is a long-haired cat characterized by its round face and short muzzle. They require regular maintenance and grooming to stop their beautiful coat from matting. These cats need serene, secure and gentle environments to feel safe.

With a flowing coat and sweet face, they are somewhat sensitive and come in a variety of colors. Be careful when choosing this breed as it is believed that the one with white fur and blue eyes indicate deafness. They are usually heavy and weigh between seven to 12 pounds. This weight, however, does not make them so ideal for very young kids, unless you carefully train it to be gentle and graceful. Even though they are known as very quiet cats, they are still able to hunt and catch rodents.

Maine Coon Cats

The Maine coon was named after the raccoon with its heft and bushy tail. They are active, gentle, playful and intelligent. Maine coon cats are especially great with children and dogs especially on farms and outdoors. It has a trademark mane of neck fur and can get as big as 8.2kgs, making them one of the largest domesticated cat breeds.

They are independent and have a thick waterproof coat perfect for the outdoors. Maine coons have an unexplained love affair with water so you may need to make provisions for this before acquiring one. They have valuable hunting skills, and you may need to feed them well because of their size.  Their bodies are strong and muscular, chests are broad, rectangular shaped and are slow to physically mature.

Siamese Cats

Once previously described as “an unnatural nightmare kind of cat” is now one of the most popular pedigree pets in the world. They are characterized by their blue almond-shaped eyes and a triangular shaped head. Siamese cats also have characteristic huge ears, and an elongated slender and muscular body. They are relatively small in size, social, intelligent, affectionate, and playful and always seek attention. This breed of cat can live up to 12.5 years; that’s long enough to keep your kids happy and entertained.

One thing though; Siamese cats have not entirely lost their instincts to be exclusively active at night. While all cats are relatively nocturnal, Siamese cats are known to take this habit a notch higher. You may need to train her to be more active during the day. This way, your kids would greatly benefit from their social and playful attributes.

Abyssinian Cats

The Abyssinian cat is a domestic short-haired breed of cat. Two dark bands on each side of the Abyssinian’s hair are banded, making them strikingly similar to that of a wild rabbit. Abyssinian cats are popular pets mainly because they are intelligent, friendly and playful. Depression is common amongst them as they require a lot of attention. Therefore, you can only get more than one of them to prevent instances of depression and feelings of solitude.

Abyssinian cats can be described as slender, fine-boned and medium-sized. They also have pointed ears, almond-shaped eyes, graceful body, and a long tail. Families who have a lot of time, patience, humor and energy will make the perfect home for this breed.

Ragdoll Cats

The Ragdoll received its name after its ability to go limp in an owner’s arm or lap. It is a breed of cat with blue eyes and varying colors and patterns. The different patterns they come in are bi-color, mitted, van, and color point. They also come in different colors such as seal, chocolate, lilac, blue, red and cream. Ragdoll cats are big and heavy, weighing up to 20 lbs and can live to be 19.5 years old.

Even though they are intelligent, they don’t require as much space or exercise like other cats. If you are looking for a cat that really adores you and one that would follow you everywhere, this is the cat you need. They are docile, calm and have a flexible nature. This breed of cat is perfect for anyone looking for a quiet, laid-back companion.

Burmese Cats

The Burmese cat is almost as famous as the Siamese breed. It is regarded as one of the most intelligent cats and also requiring loads of attention. The cat has many dog-like characteristics like greeting their people at the door, playing fetch and you can even train them to walk on a leash. This specific breed of cats is notably people orientated, full of energy and playfulness.

One of the unique characteristics is that they can live long into their late teens. Like other cats, you should not leave them alone for long periods of time. Burmese cats are small to medium-sized, weighing 4-6 kg and muscular built. These cats can be described as “brick in silk.” They also have a short, beautiful, soft and glossy coat. Depending on their coat color, their eyes can be green or gold.

Sphinx Cats

Sphinx has an almost hairless body and big ears that will have you either falling in love with it or hating it.  This makes them very distinctive and also ensures that they are strictly indoor cats. Like other cats, they are intelligent, companionable, and friendly.

What makes them unique is their love to show off and be the center of attention.  People often refer to them as a mythical creature with the face of a human and a body of a lion. They are medium sized with wrinkled skin, large ears, and muscular body.

Domestic Shorthair And Domestic Long Hair Cats

Domestic shorthair and domestic longhair cats are commonly known as “that cat” which is not a pedigreed breed. They do not belong to any specific cat breed, so their looks and behavior depend on their diet and degree of care. These cats can be large or small, thin or fat, fluffy and even come in a variety of colors.

Also, the cats are low-maintenance, energetic and intelligent. They may be your go-to pets if you are looking for friendly, lovable, and companionable cats. They live for approximately 12 to 16 years and weigh between 6-16 lb. This type of breed is perfect for families with children, singles and even first time owners.

Conclusion

If opting for pedigreed cats, it’s best to get one that matches your own personality. Owning a cat requires a long-term commitment of love and sacrifice. It’s almost like choosing a life partner, so choose wisely.

Also, keep in mind if you have other pets that could harm the cat. Cats, in general, are very lovable so choosing any one of these will make for a very suitable pet.
