For a long period, people have been arguing on which pet is better between dogs and cats. There are those who believe that dogs are smarter than cats. And there are others who believe cats are smarter than dogs.
Various researches have been carried to proof this. Most of these studies have proved that dogs are better than cats. Science has also confirmed this. The evidence that has been provided is based on brain capacity, some neurons in each of the pets, completion of a task, training and solving of complex problems. In almost all of the studies, dogs have been doing better than dogs. In this article, I have highlighted some of the studies or researches that have been done.

Many studies have shown that dogs do respond positively in a trained condition than cats. In one of the study. When a hungry dog and a cat we placed in a cube and trained on how to press a button to get food. The finds showed that the dog was able to accomplish the task. To add on that when the food was over, the dog looked human being as a sigh of assistance as opposed to cats. This proved to the research that dogs are better than cats.
The study, however, was not accepted by all scientists.
Those who criticized it argued that dogs are more of a slave to a human being and that is why they positively responded. To them, cats are more independent, and that’s why they never responded. To them, cats can solve complex tasks just like dogs when well trained. Cats are not ready to bend to human beings for assistance as it is in dogs. However, according to the American patriot Patrick Henry, this was a clear sign of low intelligence levels in dogs. This showed that if they can’t respond when they are hungry, it means they are not as smart as dogs.
Number of neurons
Scientist agree that the intelligence in animals depends on the number of neurons that they have. Human beings have 16 billion cortex neurons per person. This is why we are more intelligent than any other animals. In 2007 Suzan Herculano-Houzel and other psychologists carried a study to determine the number of cortex neurons in dogs and in cats.
The research showed that cats have got 250 million neurons within their cerebral cortex or the brain. On the other hand, that of dogs was twice as that of cats. They have 400 million neurons. They agreed that the number of neurons in every animal determines the intellectual capacity. To add on that some breeds of dogs have up to 620 million neurons. This is a clear indication that dogs have more cognitive ability than cats. This means that they are smarter than cats.
Training
Training has also been used to measure which of the two is better. In 2009, the scientist did research using dogs and cats. They wanted to know which can distinguish an object. According to Christian Agrillo, the psychologist who conducted the research found that cats were unable to distinguish the object while dogs were able. She did use a fish, and she concluded that it was even easier to work with fish than cats.
Dogs can help human in doing a particular task. It has been experienced that dogs can guide those people with disability whereas a cat cannot. To add dogs are able to learn complicated things and execute them as opposed to cats. Dogs can be trained for example on how to herd animals, how to track dangerous weapons like bombs among others. This tasks cannot be done by cats even if they are trained.
Brain Capacity
Brain capacity is also essential in deterring intelligence. It helps animals to do complex tasks in animals. The structure and capacity of an animal determine how intelligence that animals are. Research shows that cats have a brain capacity of 0.9 percent of their body mass. Dogs to have a brain capacity of 1.2 percent of its mass. With brain size, scientists have agreed that it does not have any impact on intelligence. They added that it’s because of these brain capacity that makes them do complex tasks.
Other Factor
The other factor that most people use to support that dogs are smarter than dogs is that. Dogs can serve in the military and can be used in emergency situations to help people while cats are not. In case of fire, for example, Dogs can safe for example guide a blind person from the situation. They will be the first responded to that. Cats, on the other hand, can wait to be rescued. They will hide on a higher place waiting for one to rescue them. This is an argument that some people have used to say that dogs are better than cats.
Dogs are friendlier to human
Some people also believe that the closeness of dogs with a human being can be used to determine the smartness of dogs. They can play with a human. Show some feeling of concern to one when stressed. They could welcome the owner when he comes back home if he/she was not around. They are able to learn about how we are feeling about them. All these characteristics are taken to be only expressed in dogs. Cats can express some, but they are not so friendly to human beings like dogs. Cats do change their moods suddenly. This makes many people fear them and prefer to dog. So when asked which of the two is smarter. They will prefer dogs.

Dogs are preferred to be smart than cats. According to research that has been done, most of the researchers have proved this. As we have discussed various measures that they have used. Some of them include the brain capacity, number of neurons within the animals, response to a trained condition, training and what the animal does in the society.
As we have seen, dogs are able to complete the complicated task as opposed to cats. They also have higher intelligence capacity as compared to cats. Other several studies have been done to prove which of the two is smarter than the other.
